A note on Valeriana jatamansi Jones (Caprifoliaceae s.l.) Naturalis

The tangled arguments around the names of jatamansi drug plants are examined and the correct synonymies and typifications for Nardostachys jatamansi (D.Don) DC. and V. jatamansi Jones (both Caprifoliaceae s.l.) are provided. The conservation status of the former, and the need for further work on the subject, is briefly discussed.

A taxonomic synopsis of Cypella (Iridaceae) in Brazil Acta Botanica

ABSTRACT A taxonomic synopsis of Cypella (Iridaceae) in Brazil is presented with recognition of 16 species, two of them represented by two subspecies. An identification key to the taxa is provided and species are described and illustrated. New synonyms are indicated, and eight lectotypes, two epitypes and one neotype are designated. Results include distribution, habitat, phenology, conservation status, notes and examined specimens of all taxa, as well as comments on dubious and misused names. The resulting framework revealed that most of the Brazilian species of Cypella occur in the state of Rio Grande do Sul and in the Pampa Biome, although Río de la Plata grasslands (RPG) is the most species-rich biogeographic unit of the genus.

Names of Tapeinochilos (Costaceae) in Wallacea Naturalis

Four species of Tapeinochilos have been described from material collected in Wallacea. We designate the lectotype of the genus, T. pungens, which was synonymized with T. ananassae in 1917 and add here T. teysmannianus as another synonym. The type of T. koordersianus from Sulawesi has been rediscovered at Herbarium Bogoriense and is identified as Etlingera heliconiifolia (Zingiberaceae), the combination of which is published here. After establishing that T. koordersianus applies to a species of Etlingera, there is no evidence that any species of Tapeinochilos occurs in the island of Sulawesi; the westernmost presence of the genus being in the Sula Islands represented by T. ananassae, the only species thus presently occurring in Wallacea.

Nomenclatural corrections to the taxonomic revision of The Old World species of Boehmeria (Urticaceae, tribus Boehmerieae) by Wilmot-Dear & Friis (2013) Naturalis

This nomenclatural note, a sequel to a recently published taxonomic revision of the Old World species of the genus Boehmeria (Urticaceae), establishes: 1) a holotype of B. maugereti, synonym of taxon no. 8b in the revision (B. clidemioides var. diffusa); 2) B. zollingeriana Wedd. var. blinii (H.Lév.) C.J.Chen in Chen et al. (2003) as the correct name for the variety named in the revision as B. zollingeriana var. podocarpa in Chen et al. Taxonomic revision of Myrosma (Marantaceae) Naturalis

Myrosma is a genus of rosulate herbs characterized by a compact and strongly monosymmetric inflorescence with conspicuous, white to pale green, mostly membranous bracts, in the axil of which is a single flower pair. The genus is widely distributed throughout Central Brazil, northern South America, and the Caribbean region. It occurs mostly in savannah environments but can also be found in humid and shaded habitats. We present a taxonomic revision of Myrosma recognizing a single species, Myrosma cannifolia L.f. The Kinker diatom collection: discovery – exploration – exploitation Naturalis

Johannes Kinker (1823-1900) was a typical representative of the Victorian ‘amateur-savant’. As a wellto- do stockbroker he was able to invest considerable time and money into studies of nature, first entomology and subsequently diatoms. The latter subject flourished in the late 19th century and, among his international contemporaries, Kinker was regarded as “the only Dutch diatomist of renown”. The types of the taxa of the genus Rubus (Rosaceae L.) described Naturalis

Since Linnaeus (1753) described two bramble species in his Species Plantarum, thousands of names of Rubus in Europe have been published. The only overview of these was the monograph of Sudre (1908-13) who arranged these taxa in an artificial system, which is actually no more than an annotated database. From the 1970s onwards, authors have tried to bring order in this confusion by taking into account geographical distribution, variability, and taxonomic structure. A major requirement for obtaining clarity is typification. This article is a contribution in this regard. Towards an understanding of the genus Glutinoglossum with emphasis on the Glutinoglossum glutinosum species complex (Geoglossaceae, Ascomycota) Naturalis

Glutinoglossum is one of the earth tongue genera with viscid or glutinous ascocarps. Based on morphology and ITS1-5.8S-ITS2, nrLSU and tef1 sequence data, seven new species are described: G. circinatum, G. lumbricale, G. orientale, G. peregrinans, G. proliferatum, G. pseudoglutinosum, and G. triseptatum. The lectotypes for Geoglossum glutinosum var. lubricum and for Geoglossum glabrum var. majus as well as the epitype for Glutinoglossum glutinosum are designated. The comprehensive morphological study of G. heptaseptatum resulted in the discovery of ascospores germinating by conidia inside the asci, which is first noted for Glutinoglossum species. The status of Cibalocoryne is discussed.
